Edward Perry Churchill, Jr., was born in Allerton, Iowa, in 1882. He attended the University of Iowa where he earned an A.B. degree in 1907. Before pursuing his Ph.D. at Johns Hopkins University, Churchill taught at various high schools in Iowa. He headed shellfish investigation for the U.S. Bureau of Fisheries from 1916 to 1920.
Churchill taught at the University of South Dakota from 1920 until 1970 as a professor of zoology. When the Biology Department was split into the Botany and Zoology Departments in 1926, Churchill became a co-chairman for the Department of Zoology. Churchill was also a member of the honorary societies Phi Beta Kappa, Sigma Xi, American Society of Zoologists, South Dakota Academy of Science, and Society of Colonial Wars.
Churchill taught at USD for fifty years before passing away in 1976 at the age of 94.
