Course Reserves

Electronic and physical materials which are required course readings

Physical Reserves

The preferred method for placing items on reserve is through D2L. However, exceptions may be made on a case-by-case basis.

The major exceptions are generally whole or substantial portions of monographs or media owned by the library or instructor.

In accordance with the Copyright Policy of the University Libraries, the library will place single or multiple copies of copyrighted materials from the library collection on Physical Reserve in the library under the following conditions:

  • Items are not suitable to be made available through D2L.
  • Items will be removed from Physical Reserve and returned to the library collection at the end of the semester.

Instructors wishing to place an item on Physical Reserve must fill out the online form. Please allow two business days for items to be processed and ready for check-out.

To borrow a Physical Reserve item, a student must present his/her USD ID and the call number of the item at the Circulation Desk. The call number can be found in the red binder located at the Circulation Desk.

When using Reserve items in the library, please keep in mind that:

  • To make the limited number of items available to as many people as possible, all Reserve items have restricted loan periods and overdue fines of $0.25 per hour.
  • Reserve items may not be put on hold, recalled, or renewed.

The borrower is responsible for returning Physical Reserve materials to the Circulation Desk within the time frame of the loan.

Physical Reserve Location

Physical Course Reserves are administered from and located at the Circulation Desk. Materials placed on Physical Course Reserves can be identified by using the library's online catalog or through use of the Print Reserve binder (red three ring notebook) located at the Circulation Desk.  Each reserve item is identified by a call number which is needed for the Circulation staff to retrieve it. Physical Course Reserves have restricted loan periods which provide all members of the class the opportunity to use the materials. Loan periods are limited to the following categories:

  • 2 hour loan in-library use only
  • 4 hour loan in-library use only
  • 24 hour loan due the following day, 24 hours after being checked out
  • 3 day loan due by library closing, three days after check out
  • 1 week loan due by library closing, one week after check out
