  1. With a library open, choose Save a Copy from the File menu.
  2. Name the new library and choose where to save it.
  3. Click Save.
The new library does not open. It is simply saved to disk, where you can then open it with EndNote.

Compressing an EndNote Library

Save your complete library (the filename.enl file as well as its associated .DATA folder and all of its contents) to a single compressed filename.enlx file in order to easily back up your library or send a copy to a colleague. Later, restore (unzip) the compressed library with EndNote.

Note: EndNote libraries larger than 4 gigabytes (GB) or 65,535 files (64 K) cannot be compressed with EndNote’s Compressed Library commands.

To save to a compressed library file:

  1. Open the library in EndNote.
  2. From the File menu, select Compressed Library (.enlx), thenCreate.

Creating a New Library

What is a Library?

  • A Library is a collection of citations that is customizable for your needs.
  • A library can be broken down into groups to make your citations easier to manage.

  • We recommend that you store all your references in one or two libraries and use Groups and Group Sets to organize and categorize references.

  • While there is no limit to the number of references that can be stored in one library, we suggest that the number not exceed 100,000.

Helpful Hint: Create libraries customized to specific projects you are working on, so you are only working with citations you need.

Creating and Naming a Library

  • If it is your first time opening EndNote, choose the middle option on the first screen, “Creating a Library” to get started.
  • If you have already been working with EndNote and would like to create an additional Library, go to File>New and create a new library
  •  A dialogue box will appear and you will need to decide where you would like your library to be stored on your computer. The default is in My Documents.
  • Also, you will need to name your library.

Keep it simple, and let it delineate what projects or themes you are going to be working on within it.
