MFL 417: Nineteenth-Century European Literature in Translation

Course description:  European Literature in Translation offers a introduction to the main developments of German-speaking, French, and Russian literature of the nineteenth century.  The course seeks to demonstrate the similarities, parallels, and differences among various national literature and will place a special emphasis on the historical and philosophical background of the European narrative of the nineteenth century.  Reading assignments, class discussions, and essays will assist the participants in broadening their background in comparative literary criticism and in preparing academic papers on topics related to the readings.
