USD Information Literacy Lessons: Page 11

The broad focus of these lessons is understanding sources of information, including examples that can help you learn how to access information sources at USD. Each lesson is dedicated to a specific element of information competency.

Multiple Keyword Search Result

Adding an additional keyword or two can help to manage your search. In this example we added the keyword school hoping to zero in on violence within schools. Make sure you always select what you want the database to search for by opening the drop down menu on the right hand side of the search boxes.

Adding the second keyword and using the Boolean operator AND cut the total number of search returns by more than 50%. Having over 100,000 hits suggests we need to continue to refine this search. Using multiple search terms requires knowledge of how the Boolean Logic Operator terms AND, OR, & NOT work. This is covered in the next page.
