PubMed Basics

PubMed comprises over 22 million citations for biomedical literature from MEDLINE, life science journals, and online books.

**Important: Access PubMed through the University Libraries webpage in order to have access to the full text articles available from USD. On the library homepage click on the Databases tab and search for PubMed or use this USD PubMed link.

PubMed Searching

Enter your search terms

Type a word or phrase into the search box as shown above. This can include subject, author or journal title.

For a basic topic search, enter 1 or more words (e.g. asthma drug therapy) in the search box and click search or press the Enter key. PubMed automatically "ANDs" (combines) terms together so that all words or concepts are present.

PubMed offers search suggestions through an auto suggest drop down menu and a "Titles with your search terms" box is often available on the right hand side of the page you have searched.

Limit searches by using the Filters on the left navigation bar. Click on a term to activate or deactivate the filter. Click "Show additional filters" to view a list of all available filters. A "Filters activated" message will appear above the results list and filters will remain acitve until removed or cleared.

The default results display is "Summary" format, 20 per page, recently added. You can change the display for all or selected citations by selecting a new display format from the Display pull-down menu.

After displaying your search results, view single citation records by clicking on the title of the title of the article.
