The USD University Libraries are supporting University policies and guidelines regarding COVID-19. A University Libraries response team is meeting regularly to address the evolving situation. This page has been created to provide the Library community with the latest information regarding the University Libraries and COVID-19. Please check back for updates.

 

NEW! Temporary free resources from library database providers.

Department & Contact Information 

  • Circulation
    • The Library will not charge late fees for any materials owned by USD. 
    • To keep your materials longer, please email circ@usd.edu and ask for a renewal.
    • When finished with materials, return them in the book drop on the northwest wall of the library.
  • Library Instruction will be provided via Zoom. Each session will be also recorded and made available to the instructor. Please use this form to request library instruction. Faculty wishing to amend or reschedule already booked instruction should contact Carol Leibiger, Information Literacy Coordinator (c.leibiger@usd.edu). 

  • Archives and Special Collections reference inquiries and requests for materials should be sent to Michael.Seminara@usd.edu.

  • South Dakota Oral History Center reference inquiries and requests for materials should be sent to Samuel.Herley@usd.edu.

  • Reference services are available via chat, text, or email with Ask-A-Librarian. Hours are Monday - Thursday, 9 a.m. - 9 p.m. AND Friday - 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Additional assistance is available by contacting your Subject Specialist.

Interlibrary Loan

Interlibrary Loan Services

The Interlibrary Loan services remain open with limited staffing and services during the library closure. Below are answers to questions you might have. For anything else please email your question to ill@usd.edu and the staff will respond as soon as they can.

Can we still submit interlibrary loan requests?

Until further notice we are not processing requests to borrow physical materials from other libraries due to the extensive number of libraries that are closed and/or providing limited services. Requests for articles may still be submitted.

I have interlibrary loan items checked out that were due back this week, what should I do?

Do not worry about returning them this week. If it is still before the due date you may logon to ILLiad and submit a renewal request. To check the status of interlibrary loan items logon to the ILLiad system and click on Checked Out Items under View in the left-hand menu. In order to request a renewal click on the transaction number and then look for the renewal option at the top of the next page.

I received notification that an item I requested is available for pickup at the circulation desk, but I am unable to pick it up, what should I do?

If you will not need the item, please indicate this via email to ill@usd.edu  so the item can be returned for you as soon as possible. If you still need the item you do not need to do anything, it will be held at the circulation desk. However, if the due date is approaching you should go ahead and submit a renewal request via ILLiad. In order to request a renewal click on the transaction number and then look for the renewal option at the top of the next page.

I have interlibrary loan items checked out that are now overdue, what should I do?

If it past the due date, ILLiad will not allow you to submit a renewal request but you can email the information including the transaction number and staff can manually submit a renewal request on your behalf.

I have interlibrary loan items checked out and the renewal request has been denied, what should I do? 

Send an email with the relevant transaction number and a brief description of the situation to ill@usd.edu and staff will advise how to proceed on a case by case basis.

Can I still request materials via interlibrary loan?

Requests may still be submitted. However, in addition to limited staffing of the Interlibrary Loan office many libraries are currently either closed or are providing limited services, so items are more difficult to obtain. You are welcome to submit requests and Interlibrary Loan staff will process them, but whether or not we will be able to obtain the item for you depends on the lending library.

H-Net Community Resources

  • Resources for Teaching Online is designed to be a space where we can share resources with each other about how to repurpose face-to-face course materials in an online format. For many, this will be their first online teaching experience. For others who may have previously taught online, it is still quite disruptive to be forced to repurpose face-to-face teaching materials so quickly. It is our hope that the H-Net Community can come together and crowd source resources for each other in these difficult times.
  • Remote Conference Presentations is a space created to give scholars an opportunity to share papers or presentations that were intended for now-canceled conferences. Sharing our work and receiving feedback from our peers is an important part of our professional development as scholars. We hope this provides many of you with that opportunity.

Copyright & Fair Use

Fair Use

Fair use (17 U.S.C. §107) is a BIG limitation on the rights of copyright owners. Because of fair use, certain kinds of uses are allowed, without permission or payment - in fact, even in the face of an explicit denial of permission - at any point during the copyright term. Fair use is why things like quoting a book in order to review it, or publicly displaying a reproduction of an artwork in order to critique it, are legal.

Using Library Resources as you shift your course from in-person to online

Course readings and other resources

Hopefully, by mid-semester, your students have already gotten access to all assigned reading materials. As always, the Libraries' Course Reserves staff and Technology staff can help with getting things online - linking to Libraries subscription resources, finding ebooks where available, and much more.

If you want to share additional materials with students yourself as you revise instructional plans, or if you want students to share more resources with each other in an online discussion board, keep in mind some simple guidelines:

It's always easiest to link!

Linking to publicly available online content like news websites, existing online videos, etc. is rarely a copyright issue. (Better not to link to existing content that looks obviously infringing itself - Joe Schmoe's YouTube video of the entire "Black Panther" movie is probably not a good thing to link to. But Sara Someone's 2-minute video of herself and her best friend talking over a few of the pivotal scenes may be fair use, and is not something you should worry about linking to.)

Linking to subscription content through the Libraries is also a great option - a lot of our subscription content will have DOIs, PURLs, or other "permalink" options, all of which should work even for off-campus users. For assistance linking to any particular libraries’ subscription content, contact library@usd.edu

University of South Dakota policy affirms that it is an instructors right and responsibility to make their own decisions about when they think they can make copies for students. Libraries staff members can help you understand the relevant issues (contact library@usd.edu), and the University will back up instructors making informed and reasonable decisions on these issues.

Where an instructor doesn't feel comfortable relying on fair use, a subject specialist librarian may be able to suggest alternative content that is already online through library subscriptions, or publicly online content. The Libraries may also be able to help you seek formal copyright permissions to provide copies to students - but there may be some issues with getting permissions on short timelines.

Multimedia viewing/listening

Showing an entire movie or film or musical work online may be a bit more of an issue than playing it in class - but there may be options for your students to access it independently online. The Libraries subscribe to licensed streaming video and audio content.

Standard commercial streaming options like Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, and Disney+ may sometimes be the easiest option. (For exclusive content, the commercial services may be the only option.) Where there are no other options, fair use may sometimes extend to playback of an entire work, but again, that will generally only be true for unusual outliers.

Our book drop is open. You may return books to the book drop located to the left (north) of the library doors inside the Health Sciences Building atrium. Please do not use the red drop box located outside of the building; it is not the library's drop box. 

No late fees will be assessed for Interlibrary Loan (ILL) materials, nor Wegner Library materials at this time. However, we would appreciate the prompt return of circulating reserve items such as ACLS, PALS, STABLE, and BLS manuals. 

If you need an item from the Wegner Library collection, please email wegner@usd.edu to arrange a possible time for pick-up. Please include your full name, phone number and your affiliation with USD or partner organization.
