Bound & Unbound 7

In Memory

In Memory of Janet Braun-Reinitz

1938 – 2023

Bound and Unbound VII is dedicated in special honor and remembrance of altered book artist, muralist, painter, teacher, author, social justice activist, and original Freedom Rider, Janet Braun-Reinitz of Brooklyn, New York.

Braun-Reinitz was an avid supporter of Bound and Unbound and one of the exhibition’s most loyal artists. Once she discovered the exhibition series, she entered every call.

Braun-Reinitz contributed greatly to the arts at the University Libraries, not only through altered books, but by exhibiting her installation Ladies Who Go There! with fellow artist Sarah Maple of the U.K. (2018) and her exhibition Painted Ladies Speak (2020).

Janet wasn’t one to give way to fear and lived by her words: “Artists are here to disturb the peace.”

See some of her altered books from the Dangerous Document series in the Digital Library of South Dakota.
