Language Teaching and Learning

This document describes student learning outcomes at the Novice, Intermediate, and Advanced levels in the Communication Skills, Learning and Innovation Skills, Information, Media, and Technology Skills; and Life and Career Skills.

The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages provides holistic descriptions of language performance at the Novice, Intermediate, Advanced, and Superior levels. The page offers downloadable .pdf files of the Performance Descriptors, as well as descriptions of level-based performance in the Interpersonal, Interpretive, and Presentational modes.

The "5 C's," first promulgated in 1996, have been revised to reflect the Common Core State Standards, College and Career Readiness, and 21st century skills.

Europeans have developed their own descriptions of language proficiency, the CEFR.
