ARTstor is a  nonprofit digital library with a database of more than one million images in the arts, architecture, humanities, and social sciences that are available for educational and research purposes. The collections in ARTstor have been contributed by several museums, photographers, libraries, scholars, photo archives, and artists and artists' estates.

What can you do in ARTstor?

  • Keyword search
  • Advanced search
  • Browse by collection, classification, or geography
  • Sort search results by date, creator, or title
  • View images and image data
  • Zoom in on and pan images
  • Print and save images and related data to other hardware (e.g. CD, memory stick, hard drive)
  • Create, save, and share images, image details, and image groups
  • Organize image groups into folders
  • Download images to PowerPoint, KeyNote, and ARTstor's Offline Image Viewer (OIV)
  • Save, email, and print citations for images or image groups
  • Export citations for images or image groups into EndNote, ProCite, RefWorks, Reference Manager, or a text file
  • Upload and manage personal images and sound files in ARTstor

What am I allowed to do with ARTstor?

When you are using ARTstor, you are subject to the Terms and Conditions of Use, which ask you to limit your use of ARTstor images to non-commercial, educational, and scholarly activities.

For example, you may download a copy of an ARTstor image to illustrate a research paper or include in a classroom presentation.

You may not post an ARTstor image on an unrestricted web site that is not password-protected or access-restricted. For further guidance on the Permitted and Prohibited Uses of ARTstor images, please see their page on Terms and Conditions of Use.

Some images include the "IAP" note below the image. These images have additional permissions for academic publications. Read about the IAP initiative for further information.
