The collection, created by Allan H. Schell, chiefly contains political pins, buttons, posters, pennants, and ephemera related to U.S. presidential campaigns. Campaign buttons and pins comprise most of the collection and serve as a visual record of the presidential elections between 1884 and 2004. From the campaign of Grover Cleveland in 1884 to the primary race in 2000, the extensive collection includes political pins and buttons of presidential candidates from the Republican, Democratic and third parties. In addition to buttons and pins of presidential campaigns, the collection includes campaign memorabilia related to South Dakota politics in the 20th century.
The collection is organized into the Publications, Political Pins, Non-Political Pins, Political Memorabilia series.
