William ‘Bill’ J. Janklow was born 1939 in Chicago, Illinois. After living in Europe his family returned to Flandreau, SD. While in high school he dropped out and joined the US Marines before he attended the University of South Dakota and received a business degree and law degree. He served as state attorney general from 1975-1979 and as governor from 1979-1987, 1995-2003. He served in the US House of Representatives from 2003 -2004 before resigning after a traffic accident. He practiced law in Sioux Falls until his death in 2012.
