Educational Uses of Digital Storytelling

What is storytelling?

  • Storytelling is an ancient and honorable act. An essential role to play in the community or tribe. It's one that I embrace wholeheartedly and have been fortunate enough to be rewarded for. -Russell Banks
  • The destiny of the world is determined less by the battles that are lost and won than by the stories it loves and believes in. -Harold Goddard
  • Storytelling reveals meaning without committing the error of defining it. -Hannah Arendt
  • Those who do not have power over the story that dominates their lives, the power to retell it, rethink it, deconstruct it, joke about it, and change it as times change, truly are powerless, because they cannot think new thoughts.-Salman Rushdie
  • There have been great societies that did not use the wheel, but there have been no societies that did not tell stories.-Ursula K. LeGuin

What is digital storytelling?

Digital Storytelling is the modern expression of the ancient art of storytelling. Digital stories derive their power by weaving images, music, narrative and voice together, thereby giving deep dimension and vivid color to characters, situations, experiences, and insights.
