At the age of sixteen Keith moved west from his home. Keith was an undergraduate at University of Nebraska and received a PhD from the University of Chicago in 1910. While earning his doctorate he taught at Carlton College, Minnesota. In 1922, Keith accepted a position at the University of South Dakota as professor of Greek, Latin and Fine Arts.
