Arthur Leslie Keith was born in Worthington, Indiana on April 25, 1874.  An exceptional scholar, he finished both high school and a college program in five years.  At the age of sixteen Keith moved west from his home.  Keith was an undergraduate at University of Nebraska and received a PhD from the University of Chicago in 1910.  While earning his doctorate he taught at Carlton College, Minnesota.  In 1922, Keith accepted a position at the University of South Dakota as professor of Greek, Latin and Fine Arts. He remained in that position until his death in February 1942.

Dr. Keith was also an avid genealogist and much of his research was published.  He and his wife Mabel had three children, none of whom survived childhood.
