Dephane Hammond was born on December 25, 1895, in Iroquois, South Dakota. She graduated with her BS from Huron College in Huron, South Dakota in 1918 and taught high school over the next six years in the towns of Salem, Howard, and Bridgewater. Ms. Hammond then secured a junior high teaching position in Mitchell, South Dakota. She taught American history and civics at MitchellJunior High School for the next 42 years. Ms Hammond also served as a counselor in the government program at GirlsState and later helped to revise the South Dakota course of study for U.S. history. Ms. Hammond retired from teaching in 1961 and moved to Long Beach, California, a year later. She died on March 23, 2005 at the age of 109.
