Summary

 Distinguished Professor Emeritus Wayne S. Knutson joined the University of South Dakota faculty in 1952 as professor of Speech and Dramatic Art and as the director of the university theatre. He served as chair of the English Department from 1966-1971. From 1972 until 1980, Knutson acted as dean of the College of Fine Arts, followed by a two year term as Vice President for Academic Affairs. He directed the merger of the University of South Dakota, Springfield, with the university in Vermillion in 1972. Upon his retirement in 1987, he became the first faculty member to receive the title University Distinguished Professor, an honor provided by the South Dakota Board of Regents. Knutson has also served on the South Dakota Arts Council and the South Dakota Humanities Council.
