Summary

Herbert S. Schell wrote in his book History of Clay County, South Dakota, “The Norwegians, who had assembled on the Nebraska side, did not consider the lands adjoining the Vermillion particularly attractive, and occupied what looked like a more promising locality farther west.  This was to become the Lincoln settlement in present-day Norway Township.  Among these settlers were Ole Gjetle, Christian Jordahlen, Lars Lunde, Syvert Myron, and Halvor Swendson, followed by many others a little later, including John Aalseth, Ole Bottolfson, Halvor Brynelson, and Aslak Iverson.” (pg. 16) No exact date of when this migration occurred exists in Schell’s book, however, it appears to have happened circa 1860.
